The media I will be analyzing is the movie How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. In this post I will be outlining the stereotypical gender roles given to us by the sex role perspective portrayed in the film by the two main characters: Andie and Ben.
Andie:
- As research for Andie’s article she’s writing about, she pretends to act with stereotypical female roles such as overly emotional, childlike, affectionate, and clingy to see if it drives away Ben – which it does – until she starts to actually act like herself.
- Her actual character is very calm, soft spoken, understanding, and compassionate.
- She is very career driven, which is why she acts “crazy” to get an article written and published for work.
- Andie goes to the bar, with the intention of meeting a man, wearing a low cut, open back dress = Male gaze.
Ben:
- Ben is really athletic and into sports. The only reason he agrees to a date with Andie while she is acting crazy is because she has tickets to the big basketball game.
- Independent
- Very masculine, in his job, dress, etc
- Smokes
