The media I will be analyzing is the movie The Proposal. In this post I will be outlining the stereotypical gender roles given to us by the sex role perspective portrayed in the film by the two main characters: Margret and Andrew.

Margret:

  •  Most of the stereotypical female gender roles do not apply to Margret’s character. Margret is an independent, cold, closed off, business woman. She does not date or look for potential partners because she is so career oriented.
  • Margret is compassionate and sympathetic, she ultimately decides she can not go through with lying to Andrew’s family about the marriage because she feels bad about it.
  • She is very yielding and closed off / “hard to get”
  • Very feminine, is always dressed very well and professionally, always in a dress, skirt, and always has high heels on. Her hair is always done well.

Andrew:

  •  Andrew is masculine, self reliant, and individualistic.
  • Andrew acts as a hero when he “saves” Margret from being deported by acting like they are getting married.
  • Makes decisions easily: agrees to pretend to be engaged quickly
  • Willing to take risks, goes along with the lie, risks lying to his family and the authorities
