GIRL by Maren Morris
OVERVIEW
Maren is singing to women, not necessarily certain women: young, old, heartbroken, in love, just anyone who needs to hear the lyrics. What I take from the lyrics is that she tells you that you will be okay and that you have someone behind you and to stand tall again. There are so many examples of Sex-Role Theory in this song, the list could go on and on, but I will list 4 insistences where it is shown in the song.
Femininity examples throughout the song
Not susceptible to flattery
“Man, this shit’s unflatterin’, all up in my head again” It should be flattering but to her, it is not, so she is not susceptible to flattery in this verse. This is a big problem for women to feel comfortable in their skin.
Sympathetic
“I know that you’re trying, everything is going to be okay” Reaching out to them and making them feel special and letting the audience know that it will be okay in the end.
Eager to soothe hurt feelings
“I don’t like myself right now, gotta find a way out. What you feel is natural.” Telling herself that it is natural to feel this way but at the same time reaching her audience to say it is natural to feel this way. We all have each other’s backs, especially as women.
Feminine & Childlike
The use of baby girl, girl throughout the song can be seen as a feminine characteristic.
