Homegrown Honey – by Darius Rucker
CHARACTERISTIC OF A COUNTRY SONG sung by a man
- Women
OVERVIEW
Sung by Darius Rucker, who is known for his popular song Wagon Wheel. This song is the story of a country girl coming to New York City, and everyone can tell that she is not from there and everyone wants her. She chooses him, and he is now in love or obsessed with her because she is not a city girl, but his kind of girl. The way he sings about her kind of portrays that she is confident and knows exactly what she wants. She doesn’t hold back or put up an act. Using the Sex-Role Theory we can see how she presents both femininity and masculinity traits.
Femininity examples throughout the song
Affectionate
“Long stem legs in your cowboy boots” He is being affectionate towards her. This line could be taken differently by everyone. One may look at this line and say that they are sexually using this and sexualizing her for her legs or that she is asking for attention because of how she is dressed. Others may see this as a compliment.
Feminine
“I’ll bet the boys at home can’t leave you alone” This lyric is a very stereotypical statement about a “pretty” woman. The fact that it is mentioned about her beauty so of course there must be a million guys back home that want to be with her.
“Throwing back whiskey straight, no water; Girl there ain’t nothing hotter” This can be seen as stereotyping. Going also off feminine trait, just the fact that because she can shoot whiskey straight it’s hot. This is stereotyping that girls/women can’t shot back a whiskey or it is not normal for us. Why is that? What is the difference between a man doing it and a female doing it?
Masculinity examples throughout the song
Assertive
“Pulled me on the floor saying, “Son it’s on”” She was being very assertive in this line because stereotypically the man ask the woman on the dance floor but she told him to go to the dance floor.
