In Case You Didn’t Know – Brett Young
CHARACTERISTIC OF A COUNTRY SONG sung by a man
- Women
- Love
OVERVIEW
Is sung by Brett Young, which was a song that really caught people’s attention and gained popularity. This song is from a perspective that is a shy person of how he feels for a woman. By that, he doesn’t want to come off too strong, but he has true feelings for this woman. This song was definitely meant for a male to sing it. It would be view completely differently if a woman had sung it originally. Using the Sex-Role Theory, I will be able to analyze the lyrics to show the feminine characteristics of this song.
Femininity examples throughout the song
Affectionate
“I’m crazy about ya” This is the first time that he is straightforward about how he feels. He is not just in love with the woman, he crazy for her. Meaning that he does anything for her, which is a lot for a man to say sometimes.
“There was something ’bout that kiss” When hearing the word kiss, it is a very affectionate word and action. Another perspective is that this line is very stereotypical for a man to say. You normally don’t hear a female artist sing about how a kiss made her feel.
Yielding
“I almost said what’s on my mind; But I didn’t” By holding back how he feels is a very feminine trait because a stereotypical male would be very assertive and tell a woman how they feel where he is holding himself back.
Loyal
“You had my heart a long, long time ago”
“You’ve got all of me; I belong to you”
Both lyrics have a loyal idea behind them. In the first one giving some just their heart but then in the second lyric giving the whole self to that person. This is a very feminine trait as males tend to be very individual and independent.
