Throughout the lyrics of the song, Wish You Were The Whiskey by Priscilla Block, there were more feminine stereotypes and counterstereotypes than masculine due to the singer being a female. However, the lyrics could go both ways. This song and its lyrics are reflected in the Sex-Role Theory because of the way that women and men respond to breakups. They do so in similar ways but also society expects them to act in a particular way when dealing with emotions.
Feminine & Masculine Stereotypes/ Counterstereotypes:
I’m right where I was just a week ago / Bartender sliding me a double / Of Jameson, strong, something I’ve been missing / Got me feeling good and believing / Believing I’m forgetting the taste / The burn, the sting of you leaving / I’m right where you left me / At the bottom of the bottle
- These lyrics typically are towards men because they tend to drown their sorrows in alcohol whereas women will talk to their friends and family, cry a lot and stay in. However, they can go both ways because both men and women want to drown their sorrows and forget about the relationship so it can hurt less.
Now I’m drunk, like a fireball lighting me up / Put it to my lips and I feel that rush / Letting 80 proof do what it does / And I’m high, it’s rocking me through the night / Keeping me warm, holding me so tight / Finally feeling fine, and then it hits me
- Within these lyrics specifically, “holding me so tight,” men in society are supposed to hold their women and keep them safe by providing for them and being strong and secure.
I wish you were the whiskey / Straight up waiting by the door when I get off / It’s a sure thing I can count on / The truth is coming out a little more / And more with every shot / And your memory is hanging over / I should’ve known better than to think I could trade one for the other
- Typically the truth comes out when people are intoxicated. And the memory of the other person in a breakup haunts both people because they both can be upset about it. Within these lyrics it portrays how both men and women deal with breakups in society affect both genders. “And your memory is hanging over” typically shows that women overthink and typically reminisce more about their past relationships.
