We got a good episode for this post and we shall see if it pasts the Bechdel Test.

Are there women in the episode:

  • Mai
  • Ty Lee
  • Azula
  • Toph
  • Katara

Do the women talk to each other:

  • Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee talk to each other while in the drill that is storming the wall of the city and a strategy to take down the Earth Kingdom’s forces
  • Mai and Ty Lee talk about chasing after some of the members of Team Avatar and they have to go through some sludge to do it

Do they talk about something other than men:

  • They talk while in the drill that is storming the wall of the city and a strategy to take down the Earth Kingdom’s forces

This time, we do pass the Bechdel test with this episode as there were multiple named women who talked to other women about something besides men. Mai and Ty Lee have conversations about going after some of the members of Team Avatar when they infiltrated the drill. But to continue their chase, they have to go into some sludge water and Mai doesn’t want to do it while Ty Lee does. Another conversation is between Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee when they are talking about the drill and their strategy to take down the forces of the Earth Kingdom that are trying to destroy the drill. It is very nice to see that there are episodes of Avatar that do pass the Bechdel Test.

This episode did something that we normally don’t see when it comes to gender roles with men and women. As I said on my last post, Azula was portraying a lot of Instrumental Traits and that still holds true in this episode. But Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee are considered the generals of the drill and there are a lot of men that look to them for their next move on their assault of the Earth Kingdom which is a change of gender roles since you would expect men to be the generals and the women looking up to them.
