This episode was the season finale of the second season and it was a good episode to watch, but does it pass the Bechdel Test?

Are there women in the episode:

  • Azula
  • Ty Lee
  • Mai
  • Toph
  • Katara

Do the women talk to each other:

  • No

Do they talk about something other than men:

  • No

This episode saw a lot of named women appear as well as talk throughout the episode, but they never talked to each other. Each of the women played an important role in the episode, but they were all doing different things that they never interacted with each other. But there were a few things that did stick out about this episode, and they involve Azula and Zuko. Once again, it was mentioned by one of the male characters of the show that Azula is both terrifying and inspirational in her role as a leader. Plus, she was also manipulative to get her brother, Zuko, to join her side to capture Ba Sing Se for the Fire Nation by saying exactly what he wanted to hear. These are all traits that we normally expect men to show, but it came from a woman which is a cool thing to see since it is showing that women can also be leaders and powerful at the same time. Zuko was given a choice between joining Azula and helping the Team Avatar defeat Azula, but he chose to join Azula instead because of what she said to him. She told him that his honor would be restored and that their father would love him again. Zuko was put into a situation of trying to identify his self-identity because his whole life has been trying to be worth something to his father and after he was exiled by his father, he has tried to restore his honor by capturing the Avatar. Zuko doesn’t know what his self-identity is since he was always told what it was by his father; but when he was given a choice to help decide what his identity is, he was manipulated by Azula to go with what his father thought of him instead of what Zuko believed is who he is.
