This poster is arguably the most important one that I’ve analyzed so far: it encapsulates the whole scope of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Every Marvel superhero is displayed and can be evaluated by the viewer. We can see directly in this poster how the MCU approaches each of its heroes, and where its displays and opinions of gender really lie.
Relative Size
- Black Widow is the largest woman on the poster, but she is still smaller than four men on the poster. We can see how important a female is to the MCU, she is not equal to the more popular male superheroes like Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America.
- Secondary female characters are not specifically discriminated against in their size on the poster, they are organized by relevance just like the secondary male characters in the film.
Function Ranking
- All characters on the poster are shown in their superhero outfits, they are all portrayed as fighters and strong figures.
- However, there is more than double the amount of male heroes on the poster than there are female heroes.
Licensed Withdrawal/Modern Shift
- Three characters look directly at the viewer: Iron Man, Black Panther, and Scarlet Witch.
- The rest of the characters, both male and female, are shown with licensed withdrawal.
