Song: “One Kiss” (click here for lyrics)
Artist: Dua Lipa
Overall Message:
〉This song is about how she is easy to love as it only takes one kiss to fall in love with her. The song also suggests that she has feelings for someone and wants to show them that she wants to pursue them.
Analyzing the Lyrics:
〉Stereotypical Feminine Traits
- Affectionate: “One kiss is all it takes, fallin’ in love with me”
- She is saying that it would only take one “affectionate” kiss to make someone fall in love with her. It could also be implying that she would want to make the kiss perfect so that the person would be attached to her.
- Easy: “I look like all you need” and “I love real easy”
- Claiming that she looks like all someone needs almost seems like she is objectifying herself. She is saying she “looks” like all they need and doesn’t mention anything about her personality or any of the other traits that make up who she is. By mentioning that she loves real easy, is pretty much expressing that she can be easy when it comes to love whether that be she falls in love easily or if she makes love easily.
- Emotional: “Lit up heaven in me, the feeling won’t let me sleep”
- These lyrics are describing how the person she is interested in makes her feel. Saying that you can’t sleep because you are so invested in someone suggests that you are probably pretty emotional over them. Lyrics like this usually come from a female singer.
〉Counterstereotypical Feminine Traits
- Assertive: “Might need your company tonight”
- By saying that she “needs” someone company displays that she may be forceful and demanding. Having this person’s company is a need not a want, which means it is essential to her. Also, saying that she needs someone may show that she has some confidence.
