The media I will be analyzing is the movie Legally Blonde. In this post I will be outlining the stereotypical gender roles given to us by the sex role perspective portrayed in the film by the main character: Elle Woods.

Elle:

  • Elle’s character is interesting because at the beginning of the film, she is portrayed to be a very stereotypical “blonde girl”. For example:
    • She is in a sorority
    • She is a fashion major
    • She loves pink; everything she has is pink
    • Her and her friends are only ever talking about clothes, tv, boys, parties, etc
    • It is very important to her to be dating Warner because he’s very popular and rich
    • She is always overdressed or dressed very fancy
    • She doesn’t take school seriously
    • She is very gullible, almost childlike
  • Once Elle gets to Harverd, you start to see how her character begins to be portrayed a bit differently.
    • Elle begins to study and work hard in school
      • She becomes smarter and is getting better grades
    • Elle starts to make better, real/genuine girl friends
    • She learns how to be a good friend and to care less about material items
    • She becomes career oriented, and less worried about male approval
