The media I will be analyzing is the movie Legally Blonde. In this post I will be outlining the stereotypical gender roles given to us by the sex role perspective portrayed in the film by the main character: Elle Woods.
Elle:
- Elle’s character is interesting because at the beginning of the film, she is portrayed to be a very stereotypical “blonde girl”. For example:
- She is in a sorority
- She is a fashion major
- She loves pink; everything she has is pink
- Her and her friends are only ever talking about clothes, tv, boys, parties, etc
- It is very important to her to be dating Warner because he’s very popular and rich
- She is always overdressed or dressed very fancy
- She doesn’t take school seriously
- She is very gullible, almost childlike
- Once Elle gets to Harverd, you start to see how her character begins to be portrayed a bit differently.
- Elle begins to study and work hard in school
- She becomes smarter and is getting better grades
- Elle starts to make better, real/genuine girl friends
- She learns how to be a good friend and to care less about material items
- She becomes career oriented, and less worried about male approval
- Elle begins to study and work hard in school
