Song: “Love Me Like You Do” (click here for lyrics)
Artist: Ellie Goulding
Overall Message:
〉This song is about the intense feeling of being in love with someone and how it makes your mind go crazy. Also, their touch is the only thing that really matters.
Analyzing the Lyrics:
〉Stereotypical Feminine Traits
- Crazy: “You’re the fear, I don’t care cause I’ve never been so high”
- Women being and acting “crazy” is a very common stereotype. These lyrics are saying that a guy is causing fear in her but it doesn’t matter because she is so in love. The fear she is feeling could be because the guy is dangerous or not good for her, but that is not stopping her. This type of situation is one of the reasons why this stereotype exists.
- Uncontrollable and Submissive: “I’ll let you set the pace cause I’m not thinking straight”
- This phrase is suggesting that she is putting all of her faith and trust into a guy because she is just so in love that she doesn’t know what to think. Having a guy lead the way is showing that he is more dominant and she is submissive. Also, when women express feelings of being so in love that they don’t think right, they are viewed as uncontrollable and crazy. She is letting a guy control her emotions.
〉Counterstereotypical Feminine Traits
- Acts as a Leader: “Follow me through the dark”
- Although she mentions previously in the song that she wants the guy to set the pace, she also says that she wants him to follow her. This may be an example of her trying to act as a leader to gain more control because she doesn’t really have any but the song is more geared toward her trying to follow him. This is not the strongest example because the meaning is not that clear.
