The media I will be analyzing will be the movie, A Walk to Remember.

Gender is represented in this piece of media by common stereotypes among gender in the United States as stated below.

Masculinity in A Walk to Remember

  •   Men are tough, mean, guarded, “bad boys”
  •  Landon is always there to “protect” Jaimie, for example  the scene when she sees the fliers of a model dressed and positioned provocatively, but the mean girls put Jamie’s face and the words ‘Virgin Mary?’ on it. Jamie’s peers  were all laughing and mocking her, but Landon is there and holds her.
  •  Landon acts very violently when he is “protecting” Jamie. For example, when he punches his friends when they made fun of her.
  • Jamie tells Landon he is her angel that was sent to her when she got sick. This goes along with the common stereotype that the male characters are always the heroes, and the female characters are waiting to be saved.

Femininity in A Walk To Remember

  •  Jaimie is very christen, quiet, modest, and is seen as a loser. As opposed to the “cool girls” who dress provocatively, drink, and date the “bad boys”.
  • Jamie’s father is very protective of her
  •  Jamie seems to always be defenseless and scares, almost like the classic damsel in distress
  • Jamie is very motherly and nurturing, she is always taking care of father by cooking dinner for him, cleaning their home, etc.
