In John Travolta’s ad for Miracle Grow, we see him take on a role that is similar to one he’s done in the films. He is seen recording a TikTok with his daughter dancing in a way that appears similar to his role in the popular musical Grease. That said, it is the dance that seems familiar and not him given the fact that his dancing style doesn’t exactly scream masculine vibes. In fact one might even call his role in the ad in contrast to his original role in the film. Instead of giving off these fifties masculine vibes, he appears to be acting more as a father figure for his daughter. Changing gears to discussing some of the other roles in the ad, the actor Lesile David Baker (The Office) is seen taking on a more stereotypical masculine role. For example, he is seen grilling and making a small confrontation with his neighbors. Both of these characteristics are associated with being assertive and getting things done. Another role within the ad that I found interesting from a gender perspective is the female gardener. Like grilling is often seen as masculine, gardening is seen as the opposite. Meaning it is a passtime meant for dainty women. Tying all of this together, this ad contained both stereotypes and counter stereotypes for both genders.
