I am looking at the Sex Role Perspective in episodes of Grey’s Anatomy.  The first episode I looked at was Grey’s Anatomy S16: E19 “Love of My Life”.

  1. Catherine Fox is a very strong woman, she is not your “typical” woman, she is very stubborn, which isn’t a “feminine” quality
  2. Winston is very straightforward to Maggie and he is represented as a “manly man”, asking her out first
  3. Hayes and his wife seem to switch gender norms when she’s dying and she becomes stronger than him and he is breaking down
  4. Teddy and Allison were involved in a sexual relationship behind Claire’s back, which is usually not represented in media (same-sex relationships)
  5. Catherine is resisting feminine stereotypes by standing up to Richard and coming in to his room when he didn’t want her to
  6. Men are “supposed to” ask women out, as that is a dominant trait, represented by Winston
  7. Hayes is aggressive in defending his wife Abigail, reinforcing masculine stereotypes
  8. Same-sex relationships resist any stereotypes of femininity
