I am looking at the Sex Role Perspective in episodes of Grey’s Anatomy. The first episode I looked at was Grey’s Anatomy S16: E19 “Love of My Life”.
- Catherine Fox is a very strong woman, she is not your “typical” woman, she is very stubborn, which isn’t a “feminine” quality
- Winston is very straightforward to Maggie and he is represented as a “manly man”, asking her out first
- Hayes and his wife seem to switch gender norms when she’s dying and she becomes stronger than him and he is breaking down
- Teddy and Allison were involved in a sexual relationship behind Claire’s back, which is usually not represented in media (same-sex relationships)
- Catherine is resisting feminine stereotypes by standing up to Richard and coming in to his room when he didn’t want her to
- Men are “supposed to” ask women out, as that is a dominant trait, represented by Winston
- Hayes is aggressive in defending his wife Abigail, reinforcing masculine stereotypes
- Same-sex relationships resist any stereotypes of femininity
