Song: “Roar”

Artist: Katy Perry

Overall Message:

〉This song is about being independent and not letting someone take control of your life. It’s also about getting back up after someone knocks you down and realizing your worth.

Analyzing the Lyrics:

Stereotpyical Feminine Traits

  • This song really embodies what it means to have a voice and to stand up for yourself after someone tears you down. The beginning of the song shares some stereotypical feminine traits, such as being gullible or shy, but then it proves that she isn’t like that anymore. She feels powerful and knows her worth, which is stereotypically seen as more masculine. We often forget that women can feel strong too.

〉Counterstereotypical Feminine Traits

  • Willing to take a stand: “You held me down but I got up”
    • This phrase is saying that she used to be restrained and not able to do what she wants but she finally realized her worth. She stood up for herself and got back up on her feet on her own. This situation isn’t typically seen as a feminine thing to do because of the fact that she is taking “control.”
  • Strong: “I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter”
    • These lyrics are showcasing that she is strong because she fought her way to reach her own empowerment and freedom. By saying that she has the eye of the tiger, she is talking about how she is now confident, powerful, and fierce. Nothing will break her down anymore because she is a fighter.
  • Defends own beliefs: “You’re gonna hear me roar louder, louder than a lion”
    • I interpreted these lyrics as her way of defending herself and letting the world know that she is capable of being dominant no matter what anyone says. She believes that she is worthy and no one can make her feel differently.
