Title: Lady Bird
Released: September 1st, 2017
Produced by: Greta Gerwig
Access on: Netflix
Netflix Summary: An intrepid high schooler in Sacramento undergoes the trials of love, family and self-discovery as she dreams of escaping to college on the East Coast.
Sex role theory: Lady Bird is a very interesting character. Her birth name is Christine but she wants to be called Lady Bird. Because of this she already is denying her gender role stereotypes. Her name symbolizes her gender neutrality. She does not present as extremely feminine because she does not wear makeup and usually covers herself with baggy clothes. She also is very assertive and outgoing; she goes up to men and introduces herself. She also swears and in one scene licks her fingers after messily eating. These go against her gender role of being an innocent and pure woman. However, she also focuses a lot on finding love with a male partner which follows the stereotypes of her gender role.
Effects: The message of this film offers girls an alternative route to being the stereotypical girl. Despite focusing a lot on love, Lady Bird still offers a new perspective to girls because of the way she displays her gender. At the end of the film, she has moved to New York for school. She is not looking for love and instead is focusing on herself and mending her connection with her family. This message tells young girls that it is okay to not always be looking for love which is a change of pace too many teenage movies.
