The second song I will be analyzing is “Live While We’re Young” off of the album Take Me Home. Much like “Midnight Memories,” the song describes is very youthful and describes a fun evening with friends. In contrast to “Midnight Memories,” “Live While We’re Young” places a much heavier emphasis on the relationship between the boys and the main love interest who is a girl.

“Hey, girl, I’m waiting on you, I’m waiting on you
Come on, and let me sneak you out”

In this lyric, the guys know what they want and they are trying to convince the girl to go out with them. Whether this is for sexual reasons or for something else, we can start to notice in the very first lyric that this is going to portray the boys as the more dominant and assertive part of the relationship.

“Hey, girl, it’s now or never, it’s now or never
Don’t overthink, just let it go”

Don’t think, just do. Taking risks and making decisions easily are both considered to be stereotypically masculine under the Sex Role Perspective. It is obvious the boys are trying to get something out of this girl, whether it is sex or a date night or whatever. The point is that the guys are being very assertive by saying that the girl shouldn’t think too much and just go with them. They don’t want her to say no to whatever they want, so they aren’t even giving her the space to do so.
