The 20th, and final :(, song I will be analyzing is “Olivia” off of the album Made in the A.M. Funny how my last post is from One Directions last album. Anyway, this song is just a love song about wanting to be with someone. While a lot of fans have tried to figure out who this mysterious “Olivia” is, One Direction themselves have stated that Olivia is more of a “concept” that anything else.
Evaluating Masculinity
You know, it’s kinda nice to end these portfolio posts off with a nice song that doesn’t contain too many harsh stereotypes. This song is very gushy and emotional, which is not a stereotype identified for men in the Sex Role Theory.
“When you go and I’m alone
You live in my imagination
The summertime and butterflies
All belong to your creation
I love you, it’s all I do
I love you”
This is just a cute song, I don’t know how else to describe it.
Evaluating Femininity
While I don’t think that the name of this song “Olivia” means that One Direction is referring to a specific girl, I would like to point out that once again, the name of this song had fans going crazy. One of my friends at the time this song came out freaked out because her name is Olivia. I remember her being like “Oh my god this song is about me!” Meanwhile, I remember other fans on social media being furious that One Direction would ever include the name of another girl. I guess, in a way, it broke the fantasy for the fans. I hope to elaborate more on this as I do scholarly research.
