Song: “Diamonds” (click here for lyrics)

Artist: Rihanna

Overall Message:

〉This song is about the positive vibes and happy feelings a relationship can give. It’s about choosing to be happy and how beautiful a healthy relationship can be.

Analyzing the Lyrics:

Stereotypical Feminine Traits

  • Submissive: “When you hold me, I’m alive”
    • These lyrics can interpreted by saying that when her partner is holding her she feels complete, but when they are not, she doesn’t feel that way. Putting all of these emotions into one person seems as if she is allowing them to control her feelings.
  • Crazy: “You’re a shooting star I see, a vision of ecstasy
    • Relating her partner to ecstasy seems like it is a little over the top and could make her sound crazy. Some people tend to think that women think so highly of their partners and can be blinded by their negative attributes.

Counterstereotypical Feminine Traits

  • Self-reliant: “I chose to be happy”
    • Her saying that she chooses to be happy shows that she can rely on herself to have a positive mindset. Even though previously I mentioned that her partner may be controlling her feelings, it seems like she can determine her own happiness at times too.
