I am analyzing the most viewed Bollywood music videos on YouTube using the Sex Role Perspective. While analyzing with the Sex Role Perspective, I will utilize the items for evaluating masculinity and femininity as presented by Hyde (1995, p. 134), and these specific items will be italicized. In this post, I will be discussing the music video for “Jug Jug Jeeve” by Gulzaar Chhaniwala.

Evaluating Masculinity

  • Reinforcing stereotypes
    • The main male character and his group of male friends disguise themselves as the band in order to sneak into the main male character’s love interest’s wedding. Then, the main male character sings about how he loves the bride, his long interest, and wants to marry her. This shows the male character and his friends as willing to take risks and willing to take a stand. It also shows the male character as assertive and having a strong personality
    • The main male character seems to be the ringleader of his friend group, showing him as acting as a leader. He also seems to make decisions easily.
    • One male relative of the bride attempts to lunge at the main male character during the wedding, showing aggressiveness from this male relative.
    • In a flashback scene, the main male character had two of his friends threaten another male character with wooden bats. This shows aggressiveness and forcefulness from male characters.
  • Resisting stereotypes
    • The main male character and his group of male friends are very warm and cheerful, constantly smiling, and also somewhat childlike, as they are mischievous and goofy.
    • The main male character seems to be tender when it comes to love. For instance, in a flashback scene, he gets extremely excited when messaging hearts to a love interest.
    • The main male character and his group of male friends are all affectionate and loyal towards each other, embracing each other in many instances and supporting the main male character in sneaking into the wedding.

Evaluating Femininity

  • Reinforcing stereotypes
    • The main female character is not susceptible to flattery by the main male character at her wedding.
  • Resisting stereotypes
    • At her wedding, the female character shows a strong personality, staring down at the main male character and rolling her eyes.
    • In a flashback scene, the main female character is arguing with and yelling at the main male character after he catches her talking to another man. This shows the female character as assertive, individualistic, and forceful
    • At the wedding, the main female character finally has enough of the main male character’s antics, and she approaches him, lunges at him, and makes her opinion known. Here, she is willing to take a stand and is aggressive in doing so.
