Song: “We Found Love” (click here for lyrics)
Artist: Rihanna
Overall Message:
〉With there being a lot of repeated lyrics in this song and not much to work with, the main gist is about how a relationship(s) of Rihanna’s was found in hopeless and unhappy place.
Analyzing the Lyrics:
〉 Stereotypical Feminine Traits
- Dependent: “As your shadow crosses mine, what it takes to come alive” and “Turn away cause I need you more”
- Both of these lyrics point toward the fact that she is dependent on a guy to make her feel something. The first phrase is basically saying that by being around this guy, that is what makes her feel most happy and that is what keeps her going. Relying on a guy to make you feel “alive” is very unhealthy because you need to learn to be happy with yourself first. The second phrase shows that she needs him more than he needs her. This imbalance is bound to lead to a lot of issues because one person is more attached than the other.
- Dramatic: “We found love in a hopeless place
- By saying she found love in a hopeless place, most people would think that this sounds like relationship filled with drama. I think a hopeless place means that they were in a bad place when they began their relationship and it probably won’t work out for them in the end.
〉 Counterstereotypical Feminine Traits
- This song has a limited amount of lyrics, thus making it difficult to pull out any potential counterstereotypical feminine traits. Overall, I think this song leans more toward the stereotypical side of the spectrum.
Stay tuned for the next post on…Sia again!
