In this episode of Virgin River, I chose to analyze the characters so that further down the road in this project I will have characteristics to categorize further.

Jack: Jack utilizes instrumental traits by asking Mel to dinner, which is a form of decision making. He decided to ask her to dinner, and this follows the idea that men typically take the lead in romantic relationships.

Hope: Throughout the show she typically appears to have more masculine traits than feminine traits. In this episode she walks into the doctor’s office and the first thing she says to Doc is, ‘I need the keys to your truck. I don’t have time for formalities.’ Since we typically think of women exhibiting traits of warmth, tenderness and kindness, this is not a feminine trait. As a matter of fact, Hope typically shows more masculine traits because she is very assertive, tends to take the lead in situations and will make her opinion clear in order to get what she wants. Additionally, she is very self reliant seeing as she lives alone and does not have any complaints about it.

Doc: In this episode we see Doc showing more feminine traits, specifically when he is in the hospital waiting room with his nurse, Mel. He offers her a compliment, ‘You were great back there. The L.A. Hospital must have hated to lose you.’ This is very significant because prior to this, he would have never complimented her work ethic or abilities.

Preacher and Brady: In this episode we see Preacher and Brady arguing about who will clean the bathroom. Although this was not the main issue, they still argue about who is going to do so. Brady even mentions that he does not want to live cleaning bathrooms, as if Preacher does. They seem to be competing for the ‘boss’ personality. Although Preacher has more authority in this situation, Brady is trying to shake that authority.
