In this episode I will be analyzing the Masculine and Feminine Traits with examples shown in the film.

Masculine Traits

  • DECISIVENESS: Doc says that Jack ‘is a man who makes his own decisions, he is not easily swayed.’
  • SELF RELIANCE: Doc says to Hope that she is the boss, this again shows that Hope is very self reliant.
  • ASSERTIVENESS: Doc shows assertiveness when he is giving Charmaine instructions that she is not allowed to drive due to her health conditions. She said she can, but Doc says that he is suspending her driving privileges.

Feminine Traits

  • SENSITIVITY TO OTHERS: Mel shows sensitivity to others when she realizes she made Charmaine uncomfortable she offers to wait in the other room.
  • KINDNESS: Preacher has offered to help Paige’s son with his math homework.
  • COMPASSION: Jack shows compassion for Charmaine, despite being upset with her for questioning him about Mel. He knows what the right thing to do it, which is to help Charmaine, so he puts his own needs aside to do so.

Although I did not analyze all the traits that pertain to femininity and masculinity, I think that the list I have created above gives a good amount of information to look back on. It is interesting to me to see how often all characters show both masculine and feminine traits in the same episode. This makes me think about my daily life and situations in which I use either masculine or feminine traits. Whether it is in daily life or in the show, I think that context plays a role in deciding which traits will be utilized. For example, when Doc shows assertiveness it is typically in situations where he is confident and situations revolving around his career. I am interested to analyze how context plays a further role in these traits.
