Season 1, Episode 6, Our A-Story is a “D” Story

Bechdel Test: Pass or Fail?

  • Are there at least TWO women?
    • Diane
    • Princess Carolyn
    • Cate Blanchett
  • Do they talk to each other?
    • Yes, they do, and for a decent amount of time also!
  • Do they talk about something other than a man?
    • Nope. They talk about how two men are fighting over Diane the entire time they were on the screen together.

Why did it Pass/Fail?

  • This episode was SO CLOSE to passing, but it still fails. This episode primarily focused on the extremes that some men go to when trying to get a woman. Not one thing was mentioned that didn’t relate to men! Even when Cate Blanchett was in Princess Carolyn’s office, she didn’t say a word.

Other themes noticed:

  • Two guys (BoJack and Mr. Peanutbutter) fight over a girl (Diane). It just seems like the cliché high school movie where there is a girl that everyone wants so the boys do whatever it takes for the girl to come back home with them and not the other guy. Obviously, there are many instances where girls are swooning over guys, but I feel like girls aren’t as aggressive with it as boys tend to be. BoJack and Peanutbutter spent 7 whole minutes of the episode competing with one another, and as soon as BoJack won, the first thing he said was “You see that Diane?!” He literally stole the “D” off of the Hollywood sign for Diane after she rejected him.
