Season 2, Episode 5, BoJack Horseman: “Chickens”

Bechdel Test: Pass or Fail?

  • Are there at least TWO women?
    • Kelsey
    • Diane
    • Irving (Kelsey’s daughter)
    • Princess Carolyn
  • Do they talk to each other?
    • Yes!
  • Do they talk about something other than a man?
    • Yes!

Why did it Pass/Fail?

  • This episode IMMEDIATELY passed two minutes in! Irving is left with Diane, and the two of them strike up a conversation (not a very friendly conversation). It’s like the show creators knew how badly the other episodes failed and decided that it was time to break the norms once again in terms of TV media.
  • This episode continued to pass throughout the entire rest of the episode as well; Irving and Diane talked to each other the whole episode (about things other than a man, or anything related to a man).

Other themes noticed:

  • Irving made a claim saying that “gender normative names are oppressive.” Irving is definitely a feminist-inspired character.
  • Another thing that I noticed is that the police chief in this episode was a black woman! Love to see more diverse content in BoJack’s second season
