Up next is a film that features an ensemble cast with multiple lead roles, so this allows better understanding of gender displays without worry about the presentation of main roles taking up the most space in the poster.

Licensed Withdrawal

  • Everyone is looked upon in this poster! No one is directly looking at the camera in the poster, they are shown in fighting positions and the viewer is able to give each character a deep look.

Relative Size

  • Black Widow’s character is made out to be the smallest of the main six Avengers. Nick Fury is arguably the same size as her, but he is regarded as a secondary role in the film. Black Widow is supposed to hold a lead role within the film, yet she is portrayed small and dainty compared to the other male fighters within the film. She is the only woman on the poster, and is made to be the least significant lead.

Function Ranking

  • All characters are given an executive, fighting role on the poster, including Black Widow. It is established that each of the characters have a role to fight and assert dominance, so normal gender roles for women have been disregarded.

Ritualization of Subordination

  • All characters are clothed in suits that accommodate their role as fighters, yet Black Widow’s outfit seems slightly sexualized. She is the only character without a high neckline on her costume, and her jacket is unzipped to show portions of her chest for the audience to look at.
