I will be examining Season 1, Episode. 9 of the FOX television series New Girl
Gender representations:
- Jess says at a roommate meeting in the living area that she just wants to meet a guy to forget about Ryan. Schmidt proposes a “Bangsgiving” party for thanksgiving stating, no date leaves until everyone is laid. Jess asks permission to just send the guy home without sex and Schmidt says no. This scene represents how forward men can be in conversation with women about sex even when not wanted. This corresponds to the males in the roommate setting having a little more authority when it comes to the group decisions.
- When they are listing off men and women that they would like for someone to bring for them (part of the “bangsgiving” plan) they talk about appearance and what they would like in their date’s features. Jess says no mustaches and Cece wants someone tall. The men have more sexual preferences when one roommate named Coach states “she has to have an ass” and Schmidt refers to the weight of women saying he wants “a redhead with a medium-size neck”.
- Winston brings a girl for Coach and she appears to have very strong arms then saying to him “she’s jacked dude” and that “he should have warned him”
- Schmidt says to Nick about a girl “did you ever give her a gift and Nick says “every time we had sex” relating to their conversations about women appearance and sex.
- Overall, this episode seems to be about women and men’s appearances in television
The Bechdel Test:
- There are women in the episode with names
- They do talk to each other but just briefly
- They do not talk about anything else other than men
