The next song of Justin Bieber I will be analyzing is “Confident” from his “Journals” album which was released in 2013 about then-girlfriend Selena Gomez in regards to the sex-role perspective.

The first example of sex roles in the song “Confident” is located in the first verse. Bieber states “Focused, I’m focused
She got a body like that
I ain’t never seen nothing like that, ah-ah
Like a fantasy in front of me, I-I-I”

Justin Bieber is sexualizing the body of the woman. The woman is being sexualized as if her body is the only thing about her. Bieber is stating that he feels as if there has never been a body like this in front of him and he must be fanaticizing this image because it is so perfect.

The next example of sex roles in the song “Confident” is located in the second verse. The lyrics state “Then she started dancing, sexual romancing
Nasty but she fancy, lipstick on my satin sheets
What’s your nationality? I wonder if there’s more of you” The woman is dancing but Justin is making it seem as it is sexual because the woman is dancing for the man. It seems as if whatever the woman is doing is for the man when anything could easily be done for herself.

The final example of sex roles in the song “Confident” is found in the rapping verse where Chance The Rapper states “Tattoos, piercings and she just learned to twerk
She ain’t got a heart or an ass, just her brains, gotta ask
‘Cause her ass on a learning curve” showing that men only want women for their bodies. It does state that that the woman has brains where most songs state the physical appearance of women. although this is stated, the bigger picture of women’s ap[earnaces matter to men is the biggest picture of the song. Justin Biber is starting that just because there is a brain in the body, there are no other features that draw men to this particular woman.
