The next Justin Bieber song I will be analyzing is “We Are” which was released in 2015 on his “Purpose” album. This song gives many examples of stereotypical feminine and masculine traits. The theory I will be using to analyze this song is the sex-role perspective theory.
Stereotypical Masculine Traits
- Willing to take a stand
- Leadership Ability
“It’s like you’re always looking for a problem
But there ain’t enough equations for you to solve ’em
So quick to turn nothing right into something
Take the numbers out my phone, go ‘head and call ’em”
The lyrics listed above show stereotypical masculine traits, specifically willingness to take a stand and leadership abilities. In these lyrics, Bieber is stating that the girl is always questioning whether he is loyal or not to their relationship. Here, he is willing to take a stand for himself by saying she can look at all of his contacts and call them if she is so concerned about his loyalty. He is also being a leader by standing up and saying to just call the numbers to show he is not lying to her.
Feminine Stereotypical Traits
- loyalty
- compassionate
“They ain’t ever had my back like you got it
They ain’t never had a chance, how you got it
So they can’t help but to come and hate on it
They see what we got and you know they want it, don’t question it”
In the lyrics stated above, the feminine stereotypical traits, loyalty, and compassion are being shown. Bieber is stating the girl has his back more than anyone has ever had in his life. She is very loyal to him and very understanding and compassionate towards him. She shows all of her loyalty to him and to their relationship. Bieber is saying that she is so loyal to him that the public tries to hate on their relationship.
