Clash of clans has been a popular game for a couple of years now on most phone apps. This commercial presents an intro of a cartoon battle scene that ended with a revenge button for the player who had lost the battle. Liam, the man playing the game, takes it personally and continues to describe how he will take revenge on the other player through the game. Later in the ad Liam is interrupted by a barista calling his name for his scone in a coffee shop. The barista mispronounces his name and says Lie-um. In a malicious voice, he corrected the barista saying “it’s Liam”. Then walks out plotting his revenge once again.
The game itself presents smaller women fighting and struggling while the stronger, bigger men are pulling the weight of the battle. Liam is an older malicious seeming man with a low deep voice. All the women presented in the coffee shop are in the background not focusing on Liam or the male barista handing Liam his scone. Throughout the entire commercial Liam shows a face of aggression and irritation. This typically is a stereotyped male role to be aggressive and stern. The ad presented no female leading roles but however did present a reverse stereotype on the male sex roll through the barista.
The barista was working in a well-lit decorative coffee shop wearing an apron, a hat and glasses. The humor presented was a dominant male being in a setting with submissive décor and submissive male attributes from the barista. The barista had a higher pitch voice and was nice towards Liam. This ad would be more drawn to males because of the lack of female interaction within the game and within the overall commercial.
