The FOX television series New Girl, specifically Season 4, Episode 1 titled The Last Wedding
Gender representation:
- The episode starts off with Schmidt gathering the roommates to let them know they all must bring one person back to sleep with from the wedding they attend. Schmidt pressures Jess to try and bring someone since the last person she kissed was their other roommate Nick four months ago. When they are seated at their table Schmidt decides to tell Jess that she should go for the best man after he gives his speech. Schmidt attempts to put ice in her dress to “turn the headlights on” before she gets up and approaches him. The whole episode is mainly centered around the appearance of people especially women since there are four male roommates trying to find a girl to bring home.
- Schmidt also says, “look at that, she looks like the girl from the commercial playing tennis with a tampon in”. This is consistent with the way the wedding is all chasing the girl. For example, Coach had prior relations with many of the girls before since there are scenes that show that every one of them is mad at him in some way.
- On the other hand, a character named Katherine that is also trying to go home with the best man at the wedding describes herself to Jess as a genius with a photographic memory who is also a doctor. This would align with the counterstereotype of women holding the occupation of nurse and men the doctor. She also seems to be very assertive and determined since she walks up to Jess and makes it clear that they are competing for him which is also a counterstereotype.
The Bechdel Test: Does not pass
- There are women in the episode that are named
- They do talk to each other
- They don’t discuss anything other than a man
