The FOX television series New Girl, specifically season 5, episode 7 titled Wig
Gender representation:
- This episode is about the new roommate Reagan being distant with the other roommates while she is staying in Jess’ room since she is on extended jury duty. Nick says he can’t be normal around Reagan since she’s too hot and mysterious. While walking out to leave the loft, Reagan says she can’t stay and hang out with them since she’ll have one too many margaritas after Winston invites her to stay and hang out with the roommates at their dinner table. Then, Winston says, “I’m going to make her hang out with us whether she wants to or not”. This makes the viewer assume that she is independent since she is always alone in an apartment with strangers living a separate life, concluding this as an example of a counterstereotype of women. In addition, Winston runs up to her in the park when she is jogging. She says that she kind of prefers to run alone.
- Schmidt and Cece plan to make Nick stop freaking out about Reagan being ‘so hot’ by telling him she wears a wig. Nick asks why she wears it and Cece says it is because of personal lady reasons. Nick responds by saying I don’t want to touch that. The viewer can assume that Nick says this regarding women having to have long hair to have more beauty.
- In the episode, it is found out that Reagan is not a sensitive person and doesn’t show emotion since she says she can’t break up with her girlfriend and makes Winston try and do it. This would be a counterstereotype of women being sensitive, kind, and sweet.
The Bechdel Test: Does pass
- There are women that are named
- They do talk to each other
- They do talk to each other about things other than a man
