The media I will be analyzing is the movie Five Feet Apart. In this post I will be outlining the stereotypical gender roles given to us by the sex role perspective portrayed in the film by the main characters: Will and Stella.
Will:
- Willing to take risks
- Risks the rules in the hospital to get to know Stella
- Self sufficient
- Very strong personality
- Talks back to the nurses
- Very stubborn
- Aggressive
- Often tells Stella to lighten up
- Says, “it’s just life, and it will be over soon” to Stella who is sick
- Leadership ability
- When he acts out, others go with it too
- Masculine
- Acts like he doesn’t care about himself or Stella
- Isn’t very serious
Stella:
- Very organized
- Jokes about being OCD
- Stella is very optimistic and cheerful
- Despite her very serious medical condition
- She is very gentle
- Again, probably because of her illness
- Loves children
- She enjoys seeing the new babies that are born in the hospital
- Not susceptible to flattery
- When Will tries to meet her
- Soft spoken
- Loyal
- To her family and friends
- Caring
- Helps will regulate his med cart and regimed
