The media I will be analyzing is the movie Five Feet Apart. In this post I will be outlining the stereotypical gender roles given to us by the sex role perspective portrayed in the film by the main characters: Will and Stella.

Will:

  • Willing to take risks
    • Risks the rules in the hospital to get to know Stella
  • Self sufficient
  • Very strong personality
    • Talks back to the nurses
    • Very stubborn
  • Aggressive
    • Often tells Stella to lighten up
    • Says, “it’s just life, and it will be over soon” to Stella who is sick
  • Leadership ability
    • When he acts out, others go with it too
  • Masculine
    • Acts like he doesn’t care about himself or Stella
    • Isn’t very serious

Stella:

  • Very organized
    • Jokes about being OCD
  • Stella is very optimistic and cheerful
    • Despite her very serious medical condition
  • She is very gentle
    • Again, probably because of her illness
  • Loves children
    • She enjoys seeing the new babies that are born in the hospital
  • Not susceptible to flattery
    • When Will tries to meet her
  • Soft spoken
  • Loyal
    • To her family and friends
  • Caring
    • Helps will regulate his med cart and regimed
