The ad for popular investing app E*Trade featured in the 2021 Super Bowl features a little boy who is seen being inspired to get in shape. To tell this story, they use a form of intended intertextuality. Specifically, during the montage in which the boy is seen working out with household equipment, the famous workout song from the popular Rocky film is played to enhance the viewer’s connection between the texts. Even if the reference to the other text isn’t one that was originally intended, the connection between the two texts is almost incapable for everyone familiar with the film franchise.
