The super bowl ad for 3D Doritos features actor Mathew MCconaughey being portrayed in a way that almost seems emasculating. As individuals we understand through general social discourse, what it means to be a man. This particular form of media portrays a grown actor in a light that makes him seem small. For one, he is seen in the ad on some sort of a talk show in which his co-stars and the host make jokes about his scrawny appearance. Going back to the social discourse in which our perception is derived, we know that it is
- Related to power norms
- Involves language and social practices
- It produces knowledge
Going back to ad, it gives us a good representation of the fact that people are expected to look and behave a certain way because of their gender. Eventually towards the end of the ad, he is saved by the Doritos and he returns to coinciding with the standards associated with being a man.
