I am analyzing the song “Things a Man Oughta Know” by Lainey Wilson. Within this video, I will look at gender stereotypes. The video is about two individuals, a man, and a woman, who are starting a family. It starts with them playing with their child. Further, after the parents are seen fighting about money and bills. The Father or dad then robs a bank to get more money and ultimately gets caught by the police.

The stereotypes found in the video show the mom staying home and taking care of the daughter, whereas the father is the major “breadwinner” for the family. Also seen in the video the male is struggling with the finances and feels the need to do something about it whereas the woman, is more level-headed and calm about their situation, she says, “it was never about the money.” This shows she loves their family and knows that they can get through it whereas the man is struggling to cope with their situation.

Gender is relevant in the music video as seen by the stereotypical roles the man and woman take on. This is seen in the Sex-Role Perspective. Where the man and women are stereotyped into specific roles. The woman into a stay-at-home mom, and the man into the breadwinner and money maker.
