For this entry I chose to analyzed the music video for “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” by Taylor Swift. Taylor defies gender stereotypes in two main ways. On several occasions throughout the video yo can see her yelling at her significant other. This goes against the shy, loyal, gentle stereotypes assigned to femininity. However in many other ways she does follow female gender stereotypes. Some scenes of the video that involve verbal arguments between Taylor and her significant other leaves her visibly emotional/crying. This does follow the gentle and sensitive title traditionally given to women. Throughout the music video Taylor is seen wearing almost exclusively pajamas while the other girls around her are wearing clothing slightly more revealing and dancing by gently touching their own bodies. It can also be seen that the male significant other is potentially using the girls in the background as distractions from his problems with Taylor. As far as gaze theory goes, while there is no blatant sexualization the man is using the “background girls” as his distraction from the problems with Taylor. Since these girls are dressed more for night life and dancing by gently/ seductively.
