The sixth female artist I will be looking at is P!nk. She is known for her Pop Punk and R&B music. Her number one song on Spotify is Just Give Me a Reason featuring Nate Ruess.

Stereotype

In this music video, there are not a lot of gender stereotypes seen. The one big gender stereotype seen is how women show more emotion than men show. P!nk is seen laying on a bare mattress that is floating in water throughout the music video. She is seen to be sad and distressed as if she just experienced a break up. While laying on the bed, she rolls around and stares off into the distance. Towards the middle of the music video, she is seen drowning and floating in water. This goes to represent her feeling of drowning in her emotions and sadness.

Counter Stereotype

The one main counter stereotype seen in this video is that P!nk has short, shaved hair. Women are generally seen as having long hair rather than short almost buzz cut hair. This is seen as more of a masculine hair style. This counter stereotype is becoming seen as more acceptable in today’s world compared to the past. Women are branching out and are not expected to always have long hair.

The second smaller counter stereotype seen in this music video is that Nate Ruess is viewed performing the song on a small tv in the background and standing as an equal next to P!nk. In many music videos, when the men are performing, they are seen in front of the women rather than in the background. By having Nate Ruess in the background of P!nk, this goes against the gender stereotype. Along with him standing next to P!nk and them being the same relative size, they are seen as equals.
