In this episode, we can see the breakdown of different masculine and feminine characteristics.

Masculine:

  • Jack has to change the lock on the doctors office and upgrade it to a better one. He does this out of protection for Mel and Doc since it got broken into earlier in the week. This is also a task that would typically be associated with men, to do handy work.
  • Another example of masculine traits being exhibited would be when Doc tells Mel not to be a pushover to one of her unique patients. He does this to protect herself but also because he is the boss of the business and wants to speak his mind and opinion about the situation.
  • Mel show cases assertiveness when discussing the best form of care for Charmaine, a pregnant woman. Mel believes that they should use aromatherapy to start whereas Doc says that they should just send her to the hospital because aromatherapy is not helpful. Mel goes on to state that she used it all the time at her other job in L.A. so she knows firsthand that it can be successful.
  • Lizzie, a new girl in town, has a very assertive and selfish attitude. She only cares about what she wants and wants things done her way. Specifically, there is a scene where she is confronted by a nervous waiter and she takes control of the situation with her cockiness and assertiveness.

Feminine:

  • Hope is showing sensitivity to others by offering to show Lizzie around the town since she is new to the area. She is also providing Connie with a chance to rest and relax.
  • Jack is showing kindness to Mel when he exhibits patience and respect for Mel’s request to still stay friends for now until she is more healed from her husband’s passing. He tells her that he will wait for her, which is very sweet and kind of him. He shows a lot of gentleman-like characteristics.
  • Mel shows sensitivity to others when she opens up to Charmaine about her mother dying. They both lost their moms at early ages so she found this way to be empathetic towards her.

I am very interested to see the character development in totality grow throughout the episodes. As the episodes go on, certain characters exhibit other traits from a different gender which is interesting to analyze.
