In this episode I am realizing that the show appears to show many of the women in a negative light.

Manipulation:

  • This can be seen right off the bat when Mark’s sister comes to visit Mel and accuses her of not coming and not being invited to certain events that the family held for her late husband. This is manipulative though because Mel was never told of the events and never invited, so it made her look bad without her realizing it.
  • Charmaine not only manipulates Jack but Mel as well. She plays the ‘poor me’ card in attempt to get Mel away from Jack and Jack to stay with her more often. Everything she does is to get Jack to herself, when he is not in love with her, but Mel.
  • Connie is very manipulative towards Mel when accusing her of handing out birth control like tic tags to Connie’s niece. However, Mel was in the right because Lizzie, the niece, is 19 and old enough to have medical privacy.

Emotional:

  • Charmaine appears to be very unstable and emotional all throughout her pregnancy. She cannot do anything alone and always needs someone near her to help her out.
  • Mel appears to be very distraught, rightly so since her husband passed away right before the storyline began, but it seems to always interfere with everything she does. This continues on to burden others around her, such as Jack.

Confusing:

  • Hope appears to be quite confusing as she is back together with Doc but does not want people to know. She forces Doc to go on dates with another woman on the show in attempt to, ‘buy them time,’ only there is no reason for her to do that.
  • Lizzie is confusing because she promises Ricky that she would compete in the town race with him but ends up ditching him and blaming it on her spacing out.

I am not sure that the writers meant to do this, but sometimes it seems that the women characters are very problematic and dramatic. This could just be a result of more women main characters then men main characters, but it seems that the women are always the troublemakers, so to speak.
